A MOUNTAIN CASTLE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE BAVARIAN ALPS
The Schachen Castle
The Schachen Castle
THE VACATION HIDEAWAY OF THE ROYALS IN THE WETTERSTEIN MOUNTAINS
King Ludwig II realized his dream in a fairytale idyll: a mountain lodge on the Schachen, far away from the valley and royal duties. Between 1869 and 1872, he had the vacation home built at an altitude of 1,866 meters below the Dreitorspitze - in an ideal location from which to enjoy the breathtaking view of the Wetterstein mountains.
Although the facade may appear rather simple, it conceals numerous surprises. A fantastic play of colors in gold, red and blue awaits you in the luxurious living rooms of the Swiss chalet-style castle. The magnificent Turkish Hall - with couches and a fountain in the middle - is the crowning highlight of the oriental-style upper floor. Ludwig II celebrated his birthday here every year on August 25.
In the immediate surrounding of the royal house is a magnificent botanical garden. Around 1,500 species of flowers and plants, from bavarian alpine flowers to plants from the Caucasus, can be discovered here.
The following video gives you a special insight into the castle, including some great hiking and refreshment tips. A big thank you goes to the students of Werdenfelser Gymansium in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, who produced this short film:
